Information About Labor Cramps
September 2, 2010 10:02 am Pregnancy HealthLabor cramps can be very painful for a first time mother. However, many new moms confuse cramps with contractions. There is a difference between the two. Contractions are severe and occur just before the actual process of childbirth while cramps are similar to menstrual pain and occur in the early stages of labor. Typically, cramps occur when the uterus stretches to accommodate the baby. This type of pain is mild and bearable for the mother-to-be. However, if you cannot tolerate the pain then you must see a doctor.
Labor camps are often accompanied by pregnancy back pain and constipation. In this stage, it is advisable to keep a check on your diet. Increase your intake of fiber rich food to ease constipation. Light to moderate exercises are also recommended to improve the overall fitness levels and to get rid of backache. Exercise also helps in reducing the intensity of cramps.
Types Of Cramps
Apart from the stomach cramps, you may also experience cramping in the legs. This is normal and there is no need to panic over it. Leg cramps can be overcome with mild stretching exercises, improved circulation and a balanced diet. Reduce your intake of soft drinks, junk food and processed food/meat. Eat more potassium and calcium rich foods like bananas, green leafy vegetables, fish, almonds and dairy products. You will experience a little lower intensity of labor cramps if you take these precautions. Also, avoid standing for long hours or wearing high heels. Wear flatter sandals or shoes during this stage.
Be Careful
If your cramping doesn’t show any improvement in spite of these precautions and treatment then you must consult a doctor. Get yourself monitored if the condition doesn’t improve. Sometimes, cramping may occur due to Ectopic pregnancy or an impending miscarriage. These two conditions need immediate medical attention.
Some women may experience cramping during the later stages of pregnancy. This can be a serious matter. Some of the causes of cramping during later stages of childbearing are cited below.
• Round Ligament Pain: This type of pain occurs during the second or third semester. This happens because the uterus stretches itself to accommodate the development of the baby. As the uterus expands, it puts pressure on the ligament and causes labor cramp.
• Braxton Hicks Contraction: These irregular and intermittent contractions occur in the second or third semester of pregnancy.
• Preterm Labor: Cramping and contractions are a common occurrence in preterm labor stage.
• Labor: This occurs just before the delivery of the baby. It is painful due to high intensity contractions and cramps.
