First and foremost is the myth that girls are less likely to have sex than boys are, which seems to hold some unfortunate assumptions on boys who like boys. Self-reported statistics suggest that by the age of nineteen, the number of girls who have had sex exceeds those in the other team, and considering how boys are more likely to brag about their experiences, these numbers may come as a bit of a surprise.

Another myth is the “specialness” of losing your virginity. Almost forty percent of first-time teen sexual behaviour is initiated under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. However, claims as to “non-voluntary” intercourse, aka statutory rape, are over-estimated too.

Around a third of them do not use prophylactics or protection of any kind, which leads to a higher incidence of STI (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and unwanted pregnancy. Adding to the fact that almost half of all teenagers reported having multiple sexual partners – and these are the same kids who have been so understated throughout the survey – a sexual health crisis is in the making.

Of course, teenagers will turn into adults one day, and most of them will have survived the ordeal with no bones broken. But there is one statistic that remains highly controversial: whether they would have done better if they had waited.
