Using Aromatherapy when you’re Pregnant- Essential Facts about Using Essential Oils

When you’ve had a tough day, a nice, quiet soak in the tub and some aromatherapy can do wonders for your mind and body. Aromatherapy can de-stress you, soothe you, or even perk you up! But should you be reaching for the essential oils when you’re pregnant?

Aromatherapy oils are concentrated and powerful, so you have to use them sparingly and carefully. While some oils can be helpful, others should be avoided entirely. Let’s take a peek at some aromatherapy basics you should know about.

Aromatherapy Dos and Don’ts

•    Don’t use more than two drops at a time. Remember, essential oils are potent stuff and you definitely don’t want to overdo it when you’re pregnant.

•    Dilute your oils before putting it in your bath or using them for a massage. Use about 5 ml of grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil as your base.

•    If you’re using the oils in a vaporizer, don’t leave it on for more than 15 minutes or you could get nauseous.

•    Aromatherapy can be great for soothing sore muscles, fighting nausea, or just trying to relax during pregnant ovulation. But it’s best to use this therapy once you’re past your first trimester. If you’d like to use aromatherapy during your first trimester, talk to your doctor or an aromatherapy specialist who has experience of working with pregnant women.

•    Talk to a specialist about which oils would be okay to use during your pregnancy. Some oils like Clary Sage can relax sore muscles, but it might also trigger contractions. Make sure you know exactly what the essential oil will do for you before you use it.

Is Aromatherapy a Good Idea For Everyone?

If you’re healthy, aromatherapy can be a great way to deal with the many aches and ouches that come with carrying a baby bump. But sometimes it’s best to avoid essential oils entirely.

You should avoid aromatherapy-

•    if you’ve had any kind of vaginal bleeding during your pregnancy

•    if you have diabetes or epilepsy

•    if you have problems with your heart, liver, thyroid, or kidneys

•    if you have a history of miscarrying

Aromatherapy can be a super-effective way to beat some of that pregnancy stress and soreness. Talk to your doctor or an aromatherapy specialist to learn more about how it can help you deal with your pregnancy discomfort!
