Know All About Pregnancy Miscarriage

The term pregnancy miscarriage is used to refer to loss of pregnancy within the first 20 weeks. It is the most common form of loss of pregnancy. Miscarriages generally occur in the early stages of pregnancy i.e. within the first 91 days.

Miscarriages are of various types and each type has a separate treatment. The statistics of having miscarriage are also different. Pregnancy is the most joyous moment of your life. There is nothing to worry about. However, if you do face complications, you can always consult your doctor, who will come up with a solution.

Miscarriage may occur due to a number of reasons. In most cases the reason for miscarriage is unidentifiable. Pregnancy miscarriage in the first three months is generally due to chromosome abnormality, which means that there is something wrong with the baby's chromosome development. Chromosomal abnormality occurs due to a fault in the sperm or egg cell. It may also occur because of a problem in zygote division. Miscarriages may also occur due to improper implantation of egg in the lining of the uterine; hormonal problems; lifestyle, including use of drugs, smoking, too much caffeine, malnutrition; toxic materials or radiation; mother's age; and trauma. However, miscarriages do not occur only due to the above reasons. Sex, light exercise and working outside do not cause pregnancy miscarriage.

The chances of miscarriage increase with the age of the mother. The chance of miscarriage is 10 to 25% for women who are in their childbearing age. The average in healthy women is 15 to 20%.

Miscarriage is a process with several stages and there are different types, such as threatened miscarriage, complete miscarriage, incomplete or inevitable miscarriage, missed miscarriage, blighted ovum, recurrent miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy.

The chief aim of treatment during or after miscarriage is prevention of infection and hemorrhage. If the miscarriage occurs in the early stages of pregnancy, then it is more likely that the body will expel the fetal tissue by itself and no medical procedure is needed. If all the tissue is not expelled by the body, then dilation and curettage (D&C) is done to stop the bleeding. After performing D&C, medicines can be prescribed to stop the bleeding. D&C is the most familiar process of stopping bleeding and infection after pregnancy miscarriage. After going home, you should monitor the bleeding closely and if it increases or if you have fever or chills, it is best to consult your health care provider immediately.

Miscarriages occur mainly due to abnormality of chromosome and nothing much can be done to prevent them. But you can try to become healthier before you conceive by exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, taking folic acid, managing stress and weight and by not smoking. After conceiving, you should still try to keep yourself healthy and keep the abdomen area safe, avoid smoking, consuming alcohol and excessive caffeine, radiation, infectious diseases, sports and activities that may cause pregnancy miscarriage.
