Miscarriage - An Emotional Setback

Chambers dictionary explains the word 'Miscarriage' as an expulsion of a foetus from the uterus, before it is capable of independent survival. These words are easy to understand, but emotionally destructive for the ones who are expecting their child, the wife in full glory of a 'to be mom' and the husband standing tall as a 'proud father to be'. However, somewhere, call it nature or the inability of the woman's body to uphold the pregnancy for the natural term, puts a damper on all dreams of holding their symbol of love in those longing arms. Medical science has many explanations as to the reason of this 'spontaneous abortion', which in no way can comfort or reduce the pain of the expecting parents. The surprising fact remains, a very high number of miscarriages occur and that figure, sadly so, is between 15 to 20%. Why these miscarriages? Why so high a number? Let us try to seek reasons for this emotional catastrophe.

Reasons For Miscarriage
The non-appropriate fusing of the genetic materials from the sperm and egg cause a chromosomal abnormality, which could be the most common cause of miscarriages. Some have opined that that the non-development of the foetus, even though the water bag and placenta have developed, could be another cause. This is known as 'blighted ovum'. Besides these, miscarriages are caused by abnormality, wherein a slight malformation of the uterine muscle prevents normal growth of the pregnancy. "Incompetent Cervix", another cause, is when the cervix does not have the strength to hold the pregnancy and causes extreme pressure, leading to the delivery of a baby too tiny to survive.

This also leads to preterm labour caused by the breaking of the water bag. While keeping these various causes of miscarriages, we have to remember that normal activities like exercising, swimming, sexual activities cannot be connected to miscarriages. Women may fear that vaginal infections may be a cause of miscarriages, but that has not been proven yet by medical sciences. Becoming aware of the most causes of this spontaneous abortion, couples in no way should blame themselves or feel guilty, if they undergo this misfortune.

Over the years, research has been able to shed light on the various causes of miscarriage and people have been made aware of the circumstances surrounding it. Along with the causes being made known, there is comfort in knowing that today pregnancy losses can be treated successfully and the expecting mothers can carry babies for the full term. Medical assistance is available to all that have had to undergo recurrent miscarriages. However, for those couples, who have had to undergo the traumatic experience of having lost a baby due to miscarriage, it is essential for all those around them, to keep their opinions to themselves. It would be a lot more helpful if they would just be understanding, supportive, kind and respect the emotional condition of the couple, who have had to face such a misfortune - a miscarriage.
