Forceps - Delivery With The Help Of Forceps

Forceps Delivery requires the use of Forceps, without complicated surgical procedures for childbirth. Forceps are used to take grip of or hold the baby to enable it to come out smoothly without much pressure.
After the cervix has been fully dilated and the bladder been made completely empty, local anesthesia is administered to the expecting mother. Episiotomy is then performed after which the Forceps are used to lift the baby out of the mother's body by gripping the baby's head.
Factors Contributing To Forceps Delivery

  • Unfavorable position of the baby inside the womb may require the use of Forceps for delivery to correct the position of the baby by rotating the baby's head for the ease of delivery.
  • Maternal exhaustion due to high blood pressure or a weak heart also leads to delivery with the help of Forceps as pushing might prove to be fatal for the delivering mother.
  • In case where an epidural may be required leaving the mother with no urge to push, forceps delivery may be the best technique to adopt.
  • Fetal Distress requiring the baby to be born quickly before the maturity date.
  • To protect the head of the baby if the baby is in a breech position or is premature.
  • When despite all maternal attempts, childbirth becomes difficult; forceps delivery may be essentially required to take grip of the baby's head to pull it out of the vagina.

Advantages Of Forceps Delivery

  • Helps in cases where there are increased chances of the newborn being hypoxic (oxygen starved) leading to the damage of the brain or in severe cases even resulting in death due to suffocation.
  • Helps to protect the baby's head when not properly placed inside the mother's womb, especially in case of a breech position.
  • Helps the mother to deliver her baby with ease and without much physical exhaustion.
  • With the help of forceps, caesarian and other surgical procedures may not be required.

Disadvantages Of Forceps Delivery

  • Anesthesia has to be used since the forceps delivery essentially requires an episiotomy. This can also hurt the pelvic floor of the mother besides damaging other internal tissues.
  • Few complications of delivery with the use of Forceps for the new born baby include scars on the face of the baby, skull fracture, nerve and brain damage, cervical injury, anal fissure etc.

Delivery with the help of Forceps is not a personal choice of the expecting mother. However, depending upon the position of the baby inside the mother's womb and its development, forceps delivery may be considered as a viable option by the doctors.
