Pregnancy is the most beautiful time in a woman's life. During this time she waits for the arrival of her bundle of joy. At the same time the different changes in her body frighten and confuse her.
Some of the changes experienced by a woman during first pregnancy month include -
Missed Period
Some women learn about their pregnancy only after they miss their period. Once the fertilized egg implants itself in the womb, a woman stops menstruating. The lining of the womb starts to thicken to prepare itself for the growth of the child. Some women however continue to get light bleeding. A woman should discuss the same with her doctor.
Nausea
Some women experience nausea, commonly known as morning sickness, during the first few months of pregnancy. This occurs mainly due to the changes in the woman's hormones and stretching of the muscles of the uterus. Nausea can be triggered due to certain smells too. A pregnant woman should eat small meals at regular intervals to avoid nausea. Some herbal drinks also help to overcome nausea. If the episodes of vomiting are frequent, then the woman should consult her doctor.
Tender Breasts
Due to changes in hormone levels, the breasts become tender. Areolas may also darken.
Fatigue
An increase in the level of progesterone causes low energy levels particularly during the first pregnancy month. However, this happens only during the first couple of months. Slowly, the body adjusts itself to the hormonal change. A nutritious diet and adequate rest helps to overcome tiredness.
Frequent Urination
Frequent urination is one of the side effects of the hormonal change. It is caused due to high fluid retention in the body.
Mood Swings
As the body goes through several changes for the birth of the child, some women experience mood swings. A woman may react very sharply to the different situations during this period.
Food Cravings
It is common for a pregnant woman to crave for certain foods. It could be a craving for something sweet, salty or any other particular food.
Constipation
A woman might also experience constipation during the first pregnancy month. This is due to increase in progesterone.
Once pregnancy is confirmed, the expectant mother should see a doctor. The doctor will regularly check the development of the fetus and check for any complications. Sometimes, doctors recommend nutritional supplements to the expectant mother to ensure proper growth of the child. Pregnancy and childbirth is a wonderful experience. A mother-to-be should take all the necessary precautions during pregnancy. |
