False Labor V/S True Labor

To distinguish between true labor and false labor is perhaps the biggest challenge during pregnancy. Sometimes, even experienced moms are confused. But, one thing is sure - when true labor arrives, you WILL come to know about it. The problem is when false labor shows its face. Many women think it is the real thing.
False Labor - Braxton-Hicks Contractions
False labor, which doctors call Braxton-Hicks contractions, is a way of your body to get ready for labor and delivery. You may experience these contractions like menstrual cramping or tightening in your lower abdomen. This feeling is erratic; it shows and disappears at various times. Many women are tricked by Braxton-Hicks contractions thinking them to be actual labor.
Remember, the contractions of false labor occur every 5 minutes, but last only about 30 seconds. The following are the signs of false labor:

  • Irregular contractions.
  • Weak contractions that DON'T get stronger with time.
  • You feel the contractions only in the front area, not in the back.
  • If you lie down, take a hot shower, or drink fluids, the contractions may SLOW DOWN OR STOP.

True Labor
When the contractions are regular, increase with time slowly, and don't go even if you alter your position, then you have got the real thing, baby. It's true labor! The following are the signs of true labor:

  • Contractions last around 4-6 minutes apart.
  • Contractions intensify over time.
  • You also feel pressure in the vagina or pain in the back, along with the contractions.
  • Contractions continue to become severe no matter how many times you change your position or how much fluids you consume.
  • There is a bloody vaginal discharge or passing out of mucous plug along with the contractions.
  • Your water bag may also break.

A smart way to know whether it's a trick or the real thing is to observe your contractions. If they occur regularly and remain for thirty seconds or more, then the first thing to do is drink lots of fluids and lie down calmly. If they stop, then it's false labor. If they don't, then congratulations, it's time to welcome your baby!
Never hesitate to check in with your doctor when in doubt regarding the contractions. You don't want to be too late, in case it's true labor.
