Acupuncture And Infertility

These are times when modern day science has many more answers to human illnesses and ailments than ever before. However, even with all the advances made by science, there are times when people turn to alternative therapies for infertility help. One of such cases is when women find it difficult to conceive owing to a number of medical complications. To the rescue of such women who face infertility problems is the age-old acupuncture therapy. Although the effects of acupuncture in curing infertility are not strictly established medically, there are a large number of people who have benefited from the treatment.

So what does acupuncture involve? The concept of acupuncture is borrowed from the Chinese where it is believed to have been in practice since ancient times. Acupuncture involves fine needles being placed into various parts of the body. The places where the needles are inserted are carefully chosen points to stimulate blood flow. It is believed that there are more than 2000 such strategic points across the body, which can stimulate better blood flow. As a result, more energy flows into these points helping in a better interface between various organs within the body. Chinese medicine proposes that energy should flow from the head to the lower parts and the feet for a balanced life. At times, when the energy flow is interrupted due to whatever reason, a person experiences various illnesses including infertility. With the help of acupuncture, the blocked energy flow is revitalized, so that the problem, infertility in this case, is resolved.

For women facing infertility problems, acupuncture can help in more ways than one. First, acupuncture addresses the primary cause of infertility. This could be on account of problems in the thyroid gland that produces various hormones that are good for the body and aid in pregnancy. Similarly, various internal organs in a woman’s body like ovaries or uterus might not function properly due to various reasons. For pregnancy to occur, these organs need to be functioning properly. Acupuncture helps in releasing hormones and body fluids that help in easing these organs. Secondly, infertility problems are not just restricted to women; men also experience infertility in the form of erectile problems or low sperm counts. Acupuncture is believed to correct such fertility illnesses in men. Thirdly, it is observed that the levels of stress, anxiety, or other emotional problems create havoc with the body’s internal balance. In today’s world where an average individual faces multiple challenges at work or home, stress levels can cause miscarriages or irregular ovulation in women. Acupuncture helps in these cases too since it has a therapeutic effect on the body in general. Even those not facing fertility problems experience a calming and soothing effect on mind and body using acupuncture.

However, even with all its benefits, the success of acupuncture in curing all fertility problems has not been fully established. Women who face grave medical problems may not get pregnant through acupuncture. These problems are usually of a structural nature wherein a part of the body that aids pregnancy is either not working or is so badly affected that only a strong course of antibiotics can put it back on course. Similarly, as one grows old, the body cannot produce so many hormones that are usually produced when one is young. Here again, acupuncture cannot aid infertility that is brought about by old age.
